Putting Your Best Foot Forward

posted Wednesday, December 3, 2008 5:29 PM
by Scott Owen, Texas First Bank

Hello dear readers! My name is Scott Owen and I am the HR Administrator for Texas First Bank. I hope that this will be the first of many semi-regular blog posts giving you insight into our great little company. Before I get into the meat and bones of Texas First Bank itself, however, I wanted to open up with a topic that is very near and dear to my heart: the interview process! Ah yes, the interview. It is one of the least reliable indicators of job performance, but it ... (Read More)

Rather than give up on holiday festivities all-together, consider a fun, interesting alternative that can drive bottom-line results catapulting your organization into the new year! Some companies are doing exactly that by offering engaging workshops for employees and their guests on topics that affect them at work as well as in personal lives.  Examples…….Emotional Intelligence, Emergenetics, Myers Briggs, etc! Employees are invited to bring their ... (Read More)

'Tis the Season... For a Seasonal Job.

OK, so Thanksgiving has come and gone, which means only one thing: It's Christmas shopping season. If nothing else, Black Friday marked the beginning of that insane time of year when people spend a ton of dough on gifts for friends and family. How we came to celebrate this special time of year in this manner I'll never know; the important thing is this: people are shopping and retailers need seasonal staff. It's not too late to secure a seasonal gig for the 2008 season. ... (Read More)

Insightful Job Seeker Quick Tip:  Voice Mail/Answering Machines  Update the greeting on your voice mail/answering machine. As cute as your daughter’s voice on the machine sounds and as funny as your son gargling the “hello” message may be, it’s not the appropriate message for potential employers to reach.  Record a professional message that includes at least your last name if not your ... Over the course of my career I have been absolutely SHOCKED by the email addresses people use during their job search. sxykitten sexychic video_game_aholic hotguy74 Really?  These are NOT appropriate for use in your job search.  Yahoo, hotmail and gmail accounts are FREE and take less than fifteen minutes to set up. Set one up using your name or name and profession.......... LisaSmith@ EngineerBob@ ... (Read More)

If we can haul over 2 ton of concrete in buckets....

This fall I traveled to Macedonia to participate in a Habitat for Humanity Global Village Team. Each of the thirteen team members volunteered their time and contributed financially......and that is where the similarities pretty much end. We represented four generations, different thinking preferences, a variety of religions, multiple political views and an array of travel experience not to mention three countries! But wait....surely everyone had the same goal? ... (Read More)

The Childhood Connection to Careers

posted Monday, November 24, 2008 9:19 AM
by Brett Farmiloe, Pursue the Passion - Houston

There’s a strong connection between childhood interests and a current career. It’s something that I’m a victim of.  My favorite video game was Crusin’ USA while growing up.  And you wonder why I toured around the country ten years later…   Those things that you enjoy as a kid, it’s amazing to see how they can come back later into your profession.   Here’s a collection of people we interviewed who ...
